How to Get the Best Deal on a Viking River Cruise

Viking is the river line people ask us about most, and the one with the most ships in Europe. Getting the best deal on a Viking river cruise starts with knowing what you already get in the fare, then using Viking’s own offer structure — airfare promotions, cabin choice, timing and past-guest credits — to your advantage.

What Viking Already Includes

According to Viking’s own inclusive-value page, a river fare includes:

  • One shore excursion in every port of call.
  • All onboard meals, with beer, wine and soft drinks at lunch and dinner.
  • Wi-Fi, specialty coffees, teas and bottled water.
  • Port taxes and fees, plus ground transfers when you buy Viking Air.

Gratuities, premium drinks outside meals and optional tours are the main extras to budget for.

Five Viking Tactics

TacticHow it works
Watch the airfare offersViking regularly attaches air promotions to selected sailings. If you need flights anyway, compare the air-inclusive price with cruise-only plus your own flights.
Pick the cabin category carefullyOn Viking’s longships the choices run from Standard cabins on the lowest deck through French Balcony and Veranda cabins to Veranda and Explorer Suites. Most of the price spread sits here.
Shift the dateSailings a week apart on the same itinerary can carry different offers or have different cabins left.
Use past-guest creditsExplorer Society travel credits can be combined with Viking’s offers; tell your advisor if you have sailed Viking before.
Re-check before final paymentIf Viking introduces a better offer for your sailing, ask your advisor whether it can be applied.

Viking Beyond Europe

Viking also sails the Mississippi with the Viking Mississippi between New Orleans and St. Paul, and river routes in Egypt and Asia. The same approach works there; for the Mississippi, our river cruise lines USA deals page compares Viking with the American lines. Viking Deal Questions

Does Viking offer free airfare on river cruises?

Viking runs airfare offers on select departures from time to time; for example, its published offer for bookings made in October 2026 included international airfare on selected sailings for U.S. residents. Offers change, so ask for the current one.

Can I book Viking cruise-only?

Yes. Viking’s own terms allow booking the cruise offer without buying its air. Compare both ways, because Viking Air also brings ground transfers.

What is the Viking Explorer Society?

Viking’s past-guest program. Guests are enrolled after their first voyage and receive travel credits toward future bookings, which Viking says can be combined with its offers.
